Los Angeles -- Former USC guard O.J. Mayo is in trouble with the NCAA after reports surfaced that he allgedly recieved cash gifts from the sports agency Bill Duffy Associates. Sources say Mayo recieved $30,000 in payments during high school that continued throughout his freshman year at USC.
NCAA rules forbid student athletes from accepting gifts of any kind, but President Myles Brand says that the schools themselves have a greater obligation to protect the athletes than the NCAA does. "We are not the cops on the corner," Brand said. "The schools themselves have the responsiblity to follow the rules and that means, and includes, seperating agents from interfering with student-athletes."
Mayo allegedly recieved the money from Rodney Guillroy, a known associate of Bill Duffy Associates. However, Duffy disputes all knoweldege of any gifts Mayo recieved. "I haven't seen any evidence of them saying we gave O.J. Mayo a dime, and that has not happened," Duffy told the AP. "I don't see any evidence of any other type of transaction. This is what this guy is saying. Obviously his credibility should be in question as well."
Meanwhile, Mayo who was sitting courtside at game four between the Celtics and Cavaliers was quite mum on the issue.
"I don't think it's good just because I'm really focused on the job, really wanting to do well on my workouts and my preparation, but at the same time it's kind of a road block, another obstacle," Mayo told The Associated Press. "I just want to get to the bottom of it and just find out what's really going on."
The Mayo case has called into question the NBA's age limit. The rule says that a player has to be one-year removed from high school before declaring for the NBA Draft. However, the rule allows for the possiblity, as in Mayo's case for athletes to go one and done in college.
"The NCAA has no ability to influence, in any way, the age rule," he said. "So any age limitation rules, the 19-year-olds who are so-called 'one and done,' are the result of bargaining negotiation between the NBA and the players' association. The NCAA was not involved in any way in that bargaining in setting up the rule. Only the NBA management and the players association set those rules."
