Quarter Reports

A quarter of the way through the MLB season and we have learned nothing is certain. There have been plenty of surprises: Marlins, Rays, Cardinals, Orioles, Athletics and disappointments: Tigers, Padres, Rockies. Much more on the quarter mark of the season here.

 Maddux wins number 350

Greg Maddux got his 350th career win with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. He worked six innings giving up just one run before turining the game over to the bullpen. Maddux became just the ninth pitcher in big league history to record 350 wins. He has an all-time record of 350-217.

Marlins Trying to Lock up Ramirez

The Florida Marlins are trying to sign their franchise shortstop Hanley Ramirez to a long term deal. Reports are that the Marlins and Ramirez have reached a tentative agreegment on a six year $70 million contract. Ramirez is hitting .336 with 8 HR and 21 RBI this season.

The Pink is Back

Major League Basball will continue its tradition of pink bats on Mother's Day. Along with the pink bats players will also wear pink wristbands. Bats that will be used on Sunday May 11 will be auctioned off with proceeds going to benefit breast cancer awareness. For more information vist MLB's site and http://www.komen.org/

Seattle Slugfest

The Mariners and Rangers came to blows after Rangers pitcher Eddie Guardado's pitch to Richie Sexson came mildly close to Sexson's head. Sexson may have over-reacted, but the brawl is great. See for yourself here.

Davis Cancer Free

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis has been declared cancer free after he had sucessful surgery to remove cancerous cells earlier this month. Davis made two starts this season with the cancer still in his body. He is scheduled to make two rehab starts with Triple A Tuscon before returning to the Diamondbacks.

Los Angeles -- Former USC guard O.J. Mayo is in trouble with the NCAA after reports surfaced that he allgedly recieved cash gifts from the sports agency Bill Duffy Associates. Sources say Mayo recieved $30,000 in payments during high school that continued throughout his freshman year at USC.

NCAA rules forbid student athletes from accepting gifts of any kind, but President Myles Brand says that the schools themselves have a greater obligation to protect the athletes than the NCAA does. "We are not the cops on the corner," Brand said. "The schools themselves have the responsiblity to follow the rules and that means, and includes, seperating agents from interfering with student-athletes."

Mayo allegedly recieved the money from Rodney Guillroy, a known associate of Bill Duffy Associates. However, Duffy disputes all knoweldege of any gifts Mayo recieved. "I haven't seen any evidence of them saying we gave O.J. Mayo a dime, and that has not happened," Duffy told the AP. "I don't see any evidence of any other type of transaction. This is what this guy is saying. Obviously his credibility should be in question as well."

Meanwhile, Mayo who was sitting courtside at game four between the Celtics and Cavaliers was quite mum on the issue.

"I don't think it's good just because I'm really focused on the job, really wanting to do well on my workouts and my preparation, but at the same time it's kind of a road block, another obstacle," Mayo told The Associated Press. "I just want to get to the bottom of it and just find out what's really going on."

The Mayo case has called into question the NBA's age limit. The rule says that a player has to be one-year removed from high school before declaring for the NBA Draft. However, the rule allows for the possiblity, as in Mayo's case for athletes to go one and done in college.

"The NCAA has no ability to influence, in any way, the age rule," he said. "So any age limitation rules, the 19-year-olds who are so-called 'one and done,' are the result of bargaining negotiation between the NBA and the players' association. The NCAA was not involved in any way in that bargaining in setting up the rule. Only the NBA management and the players association set those rules."
